My Online Community I aimlessly wondered the Internet trying to find a community suitable for me. I wasn’t sure what I was looking for. I have many interests, but I really don’t have a strong passion for something. So I decided to join a community in which I could express myself as a teen and talk about general issues. I joined the mtv.com community. There I expressed my thoughts on everything, ranging from music to daily events that shape our world. There I had a chance to share my opinions and beliefs, as others posted their thoughts and perspectives on certain subjects. Online communities are rather congruent to offline ones. They are both appealing yet displeasing at the same time. On the second day of being a member, I wanted to start posting some of my own thoughts on certain things. I started to read messages ranging from questions like, â€Å"what’s your favorite commercial,† to questions like, â€Å"why censor a record that does little more than personalize the struggles of abortion and prompt a national dialogue on the topic?† I clicked on the reply button, and I started responding to all these messages. I spent more than an hour browsing the site and responding to all these questions that sparked an interest in me. Some people had great sense of humors, and others didn’t do anything else but criticize anyone who didn’t agree with his/her own opinion. There were several drawbacks in my community. The previous day I had posted several questions that I wanted people to answer to, but since the community is so large, my message was lost in the middle of several other messages. I had posted a question on whether America has too many laws or not, and It took me more than 10 minutes of clicking the â€Å"next page† button to find it. Several people had responded to it, and it was nice to see that some people agreed with me. It was also very interesting to see how others disagreed with me and read their view on the subject. Child Labour: NOT Always Wrong Essay A young child dies from exhaustion, their limp body has been pushed to the very limit and they finally give in to death and another child has just become a statistic. This child was not even eleven years old. They had just completed their twenty hour day and then stumbled home 6 miles from where they were working. They saw their house in the distance which gave them hope to keep on walking. They dragged their feet towards the corner where they slept; their eyes are drooping not just from physical tiredness but from the pain of living this way. The last thing this little child saw was darkness, the last thing this weak child felt was coldness and the last thing this unfortunate child could do, was give up. At last this child is able to rest. This child was a victim of child labour. So, I ask you; is child labour morally right? I will argue that the exploitation of children is always wrong but that sometimes child labour is a necessary evil. I will also distinguish between child labour and child work. According to UNICEF, there are an estimated one hundred and fifty eight million children aged five to fourteen in child labour worldwide. Millions of children are engaged in dangerous situations or conditions, such as working in mines, working with chemicals and pesticides in agriculture or working with dangerous machinery. They are everywhere but invisible, working as domestic servants in homes, labouring behind the walls of workshops, hidden from view in plantations. If there is nothing wrong with child labour, then why is the exploitation so secret? Do you ever wonder when you go into certain shops how a handmade t-shirt can be so cheap? Or on the other hand, products which are sold to us at extremely high prices and we assume. .elivers newspapers before school might actually benefit from learning how to work, gaining responsibility, and a bit of money. If a child has a part time job they can learn the value of money. So I believe that the issue of child labour is not simple. As Unicef’s 1997 State of the World’s Children Report argued, children’s work needs to be seen as having two extremes. On one hand, there is the destructive or exploitative work and, on the other hand, there is beneficial work promoting or enhancing children’s development without interfering with their schooling, recreation and rest. ‘And between these two poles are vast areas of work that need not negatively affect a child’s development.’ My firm belief is that there is a difference between child labour and child work and that in both cases the issue is whether or not the child is deliberately being exploited.

Joe Schmo Dr. Bryan Corbin Composition 1301 February 7, 2017 ENFP Myers - Briggs Type Indicator Our day to day interactions encompass all aspects of life which can be personal in nature like talking to a child, a spouse, or even just a casual conversation with the next-door neighbor. In my research of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and preparation for this paper, I have learned many things about myself. One of the goals of this indicator is to point out how diverse, varied , and beautifully unique we are as a human race. My personality type ENFP , as determined from the MBTI, directly affects how I interact with the world. In this research assignment, I will discuss the details about the test and how the results influence my communication with others, my relationships with others, and how I learn. Background The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test results are derived from a series of questions individual s must answer honestly to elicit a truthful response regarding their personality type. The MBTI tool was developed in the 1940s by Isabel Briggs Myers and her mother Katharine Briggs ( Watchwellcast ) , "to make the insights of type theory accessible to individuals and groups ." F rom this Indicator Test , one can determine his or her personality type out of the 16 possible results ( Myers - Briggs ). Interestingly, this tool was designed to help get more women in the workforce during the WWII era ( Watchwellcast ) . " During the Depression years of the 1930s , when jobs were quite scarce, women had been openly discouraged from working outside the home" ( Yellin 39). The MBTI wa s use ful in assisting these women to find their particular place in the working world. By determining individual personality characteristics, this tool had a direct effect on introducing women into an appropriate place in a working society ( Watchwellcast ). This exercise consists of four steps, with each step yield ing two possible outcomes . Step one determines what stimulates a person, determining whether they are an extrovert or introvert , referred to as "E" or "I " (Watchwellcast). Step two determines how an individual gathers information and learn s , resulting in one's learning preferences which are guided by sense or intuition ( "S" or " N " ) ( Watchwellcast ) . Step three indicates decision - making preferences ( Watchwellcast ). This step determines whether or not one is considered a thinker (making a decision based on data) or a feeler (doing what feels right at the time, resulting in sometimes spontaneous decisions) , r eferred to as "T" or "F ." Step four shows one's attitudes toward the world as evidenced by a person's judgments or perceptions, "J" or "P " (Watchwellcast). This process gene rates four letters, with the combination determining a personality type . For example , the results may yield ESTP, ENTP, ISFJ, IN TP, and so on for 16 possible outcomes (Myers-Briggs) . Finally, the combination of letters that result from this quiz will determine an assessment of one's personality ( Watchwellcast ). My personality type is ENFP. Some personality characteristics used to describe this category are : W armly enthusiastic and imaginative, seeing life as full of possibilities, making connections between events and information very quickly, and confidently proce ss- based on the patterns they see, wanting a lot of affirmation from others, and readily give appreciation and support, being spontaneous and flexible, often relying on my ability to improvise and verbal fluency (Myers - Briggs). I will be explaining these characteristics, in a detailed manner , through my chosen career path. My research will include how I handle my relationships, the way in which I communicate, and the learning style that w orks best for me , my career, relationships, personal communication style, and learning style. Career Social interaction and spontaneity are accented in the ENFP profile. My c urrent job and c areer path require strong problem - solving skills and the ability to be very flexible . This personality style does no t do well with rigid structure. Thankfully, my job allows me to be independent and dictate my daily schedule.

The initial draft of the book was as a long short story, however knowing that traditional publishers have little appetite for publishing single stories, I decided to take the self-publishing route.My first step was to find an editor and cover designer. Having spent some time wondering where to find a professional editor and designer, I eventually met an author at a Byte the Book gathering who told me he’d used Reedsy.   This network of professionals almost rhymes with easy-peasy - and when my turn came, Reedsy really was easy-peasy to use! What I hadn’t anticipated was just how fascinating and enjoyable the editing process would turn out to be.Having scrolled through the CVs and biographies of all the experienced editors vetted by Reedsy, I matched myself with Lane Ashfeldt. I was attracted to Lane because she’s an award-winning author who also teaches creative writing and has experience as an editor of both short fiction and novels. Even better, her published collection of fiction, SaltWater, seemed to have thematic resonances with my project. The target audience for The House At Roc Noir is more likely to be female, so it also seemed sensible to pitch for a female editor (sorry, chaps!). The only thing that was missing was a mention of a cat in her blurb. Never mind, she probably hates them. I’ll have to ask her one day. My Reedsy cover designer, Lizzie Gardiner, mentioned her cat, so that made up for it.I was delighted when Lane and I struck our bargain and started our collaboration. Lane suggested a structural edit and, as it was a short piece at 15,000 words, she offered to do a line by line edit too. She asked for a steer on genre and target audience, as well as a synopsis and some photographs of Corsica from my travels.She read my draft and sent me a detailed editorial assessment with developmental edit suggestions. It was like a school report but in a good way. Overall she called it ‘a very satisfying short read’, praising its ‘psychological suspense’ and ’atmospheric setting’. She then follo wed it with some great practical advice to develop the text even further.The opening of the story introduces Alice and her lawyer husband Nick travelling to a remote bay in the north of the island. Lane suggested strengthening the beginning by turning the holiday location into a birthday surprise for Alice. Her guidance included better ‘ordering and sequencing’ of the journey to keep the reader in the ‘now’ of the narrative. She also made it clear however, that this did not necessitate extensive rewrites. Lane reminded me that it’s important that ‘we get the story and the other characters filtered very much through Alice’s perspective’. I’d slipped on the writer’s equivalent of that bar of soap a couple of times. Also, I needed to allow Nick to do more and develop his character which in turn, after rewrites, led to a more interesting husband and wife dynamic.Then I spotted a margin note: ‘I’ve begun to w onder if there perhaps ought to be more definite indications of a sex life between Alice and Nick†.  Given the genre and the intended readership, this did seem like a missing element. With a big gulp, I went back to the manuscript to insert some subtle steaminess into my couple’s activities! Lane liked Cally, Nick and Alice’s daughter, and the restaurant owner Antoine and she suggested that I expand both of their roles in the story. I threw in a cat too, basically a carbon copy of the tabby that’s lolling on my desk right now. Lane liked the cat but possibly only in her professional capacity as character assessor†¦The end section of my story shifted to reported events, from Nick’s viewpoint. Lane pointed out (spoiler on the horizon) that although this worked it prevented an interpretation ‘that might include Alice and demonstrate her recovery from the events’. So it was back to the keyboard again to reimagine the last section wit h Alice at the heart of the narrative. I liked the changes, which gave the story a much greater sense of resolution.Other points that changed in rewrites were the length and the title of the book. Lane advised that a longer read would hit the KDP pot of gold as an increased royalty rate kicks in at certain price points. The suggested revisions also extended the length significantly. The finished length was 25,000 words – technically a novella rather than a short story. My working title was ‘The Sea House’, however I hadn’t thought to check online. Lane pointed out it had been expended by Esther Freud and others - not necessarily a barrier to usage, but something she wanted to check whether I was aware of, or not. I had a think about this and came up with several possible new titles, which were duly cross-tested on a few potential buyers. Finally I selected the new title, The House At Roc Noir. Fortunately the cover art had not yet been commissioned, so mak ing this change did not incur any additional costs.Lane was really generous with her time and I felt that she was fully involved with the process. She was clear that while she hoped her input and suggestions made it easier for me to finish, she insisted that ‘it is important for you to own and control this story – not me!’I soft-launched ‘The House At Roc Noir’ in mid-May and it made it half-way up the top 100 paid Kindle holiday reads in the first week of publication and the feedback so far has been positive. I’ve plenty more to do to reach out to summer holiday readers, as well as progress my Greek family saga novel. The MoLAA essays During our last visit to the Museum of Latin American Art, we had the chance to explore a brief part of Central and South American Art. As we approached the gate that divided the street from the museum property, we saw a couple of flags indicating the entrance to the lot. When we entered the parking lot, we noticed that, even though the time was definitely not the best for going for a tour in a museum, there were a lot of cars. The building that constituted the museum was very modest and it could be easily confounded with the surrounding ones. When I entered the perimeter of the building, I had four choices: the first was to enter the restaurant, which was actually almost external to the museum; the second to get in the gift-shop, the third to go into the little working place for children, and last, but not least, to enter the actual museum straight ahead through a short and wide corridor. As one gets to the end of the corridor, the entrance is delimitated by a small table which is barely noticeable from the entrance. Behind the table there is a wide room with all the new acquisitions. This presentation itself anticipates the theme through the show of Diego Riveras political paintings. In fact, he has the ability to turn familiar images into Art. On our left, we could get into a room containing the works of George Marà ¬n, a Mexican artist from Urapan. On the right we could enter the actual exhibition. The first series of paintings was from Mexico. In the middle of the corridor, there is a map of Central and South American countries on one side, while on the other, a large doorway gave an overview to the core of the museum. The rest of the museum was arranged very casually, in such a way, though, in which one could understand easily the differences of the different countries. In the special exhibition, the images were very disturbing and unique with a very sad tone. There was definitely a reference to the Carnival, where ...
